The bar chart sets out the percentages of men and women aged 60-64 who were employed in four countries (Belgium, USA, Japan and Indonesia) between 1970 and 2000.
Overall, the USA and Indonesia recorded relatively high employment rates for both genders, whereas Belgium had the lowest proportion of employed women.
Looking first at 1970, the USA recorded the highest employment rates for both men and women, at 86% and 78% respectively. Indonesia followed, with 84% of men and 65% of women employed. Belgium and Japan had lower figures, particularly for women, at 63% and 56% respectively.
Turning to 2000, employment rates generally declined, with the most dramatic fall occurring in Belgium. The proportion of employed women dropped from 63% to just 8%, while the figure for men decreased from 79% to 52%. In contrast, the USA, Japan and Indonesia experienced smaller declines in both genders.
