In 1980, petrol and oil were the most widely used fuels, at about 35 quadrillion units. After a slight decline, their use increased steadily to around 40 units by 2005 and is projected to approach 50 by 2030. Coal started at just over 15 units, rising to roughly 25 by 2015, while natural gas grew from about 20 to 25 units and is expected to reach around 30 by 2030.
By contrast, nuclear, solar/wind, and hydropower remained below 10 units throughout. Nuclear increased slightly before stabilizing, solar and wind grew gradually and overtook hydropower around 2010, while hydropower remained stable near 3 units.
In summary, while petrol and oil continue to dominate U.S. energy consumption, coal and natural gas usage also increase, whereas renewable and nuclear sources play a relatively minor role.
