Overall, car use declined considerably over the period, whereas train travel became increasingly popular. By 2020, the proportion of commuters using cars had fallen to the same level as that travelling by train, while buses remained the least popular means of transport.

In 2000, cars were by far the most widely used mode of transport, accounting for 60% of commuters. This figure subsequently decreased to 50% in 2010 before falling further to 40% in 2020. In contrast, the proportion travelling by train rose steadily from 15% in 2000 to 25% a decade later, reaching 40% by the end of the period.

Bus use followed a different pattern. It remained unchanged at 25% between 2000 and 2010, before declining to 20% in 2020. Consequently, train travel overtook bus travel by 2010 and had become just as common as car travel by the end of the period. The figures therefore indicate a substantial shift away from cars towards trains over these two decades.
