The two maps given illustrate the transformation of a village called Harborne in the period between 1936 and 2007.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is evident that the town witnessed significant changes, cutting down some natural spots and extending the residential areas.
From 1936 to 2007, the number of trees decreased significantly in the northwestern part of Harborne, whereas the region around the river was developed into a residential area to meet the increasing demand for accommodation in the northeast over the period shown. In the centre of the town, they built a shopping centre, while the bank, library, and post office remained. Moreover, the sweet shop and butcher’s on the opposite site were demolished to make way for a supermarket to serve local inhabitants’ daily necessities, and a travel agent was built to replace the old flower shop.
In 2007, the government offices to the south of the library were turned into a museum, and the adjacent farmland was also redesigned as a golf course at the same time. Meanwhile, the cycle path which is located in the southwest of the map was converted into a curved road.
