Overall, housing accounted for the largest proportion of household expenditure in Malaysia, while other goods and services represented the biggest category in Japan. Health care was the smallest area of spending in both countries.
In Japan, other goods and services accounted for the largest share of household spending, at 29%. Food was the second largest category, representing 24% of expenditure, followed by housing at 21% and transport at 20%. By contrast, only 6% of household expenditure was allocated to health care.
In Malaysia, housing made up a considerably larger proportion, at 34%, compared with 21% in Japan. On the other hand, transport accounted for just 10% in Malaysia, which was half the figure for Japan, at 20%. Food accounted for a similar proportion in the two countries, at 24% in Japan and 27% in Malaysia. Similarly, other goods and services represented 29% in Japan and 26% in Malaysia. Health care was the smallest category in both countries, accounting for 6% in Japan and only 3% in Malaysia.
