Overall, over-grazing and deforestation are main worldwide reasons for land degradation and Europe had the highest percentage of total land degradation in 1990.
In terms of causes, over-grazing and deforestation rank first accounting for approximately the same biggest problem, at 35% and 30% respectively. Over-cultivation (28%) also damage to land quality, just 7% of total amount formed other reasons.
With regard to causes of land degradation by region, the highest proportion of Europe for total land degradation, at 23%, while Oceania larger than that of causes of North America by a narrow margin, with the former and the later being responsible for 13% and 5%.In Europe, deforestation and over-cultivation were main causes for land degradation, which accounted for 9.8% and 7.7%, while North America had these reasons less than Europe for 0.2% and 3.3% in turn. The figure for over-grazing contributes for North America (1.5%) and Europe (5.5%). In Oceania, the biggest share cause was over-grazing (11.3%). However, just 3% was allocated to deforestation.
