Overall, the deterioration of land was majorly caused by cattle overgrazing. On the other hand, European lands were the most affected.

There are 3 primary reasons of land degeneration ( over-grazing, deforestation, over-cultivation) and, in a whole, accounts for 90% of the issue. Over-grazing by cattle has contributed about 35% of the land degradation, followed by deforestation and over-cultivation at 30 and 28 percent, respectively. Moreover, 7% of the degrading areas were caused by other factors.

Turing to the effects of this phenomena, in 1990, 23% of the European lands were destroyed, in which the major factor of depreciation was deforestation. Oceania was the next affected location in the same year, however, the biggest cause of its problem was over-grazing . Furthermore, the least affected zone was North America with a minimum of 5% damage, although the effects were majorly caused by over-cultivation (3.3%) only over there.
