Overall, the number of local research students is higher than international research students in both years. At the beginning, local male made up the highest contribution to the researches in Australia, while non-local female was the smallest segment. In comparison, at the end of the period, the number of non-local students increased than what was in 2001 and the local students are still the dominant share in Australian universities.
In 2001, the total students number who conducting research in the universities is 38849.The majority of researches was done by local students with 87 per cent. The number of local male exceed the female only by 1%. The percentage of local research students decreased slightly by 14% in 2010 including the male rate which still considered the highest contributor.
The international students accounted for 13% of researches in Australian universities and increased up to 27% in 2010. In 2001, the rates of non-local female and male made up 4% and 9%, respectively, and these ratios rose moderately to 15% and 12% in 2010.
