This line chart compares the the proportions of British people with different number of cars between 1975 and 2005.
Overall, the share for those who had three or two cars saw an upward trend, whereas the opposite was true for the segment of the population possessing no car. Moreover, the number of people preferring to own only one car was always the highest despite seeing extreme changes.
The only category with a generally declining pattern was for those who decided to have no car. Starting at a bit under 45%, it experienced a sharp decrease to 25% in 1985. This figure then also kept declining but much slower, compromising slightly over 20% at the end.
Looking at the increased trends, people having two cars exhibited the biggest growth. Despite standing at about 7% initially, there was a marked increase to almost 20% in 2005. The figure of 3-car owners followed a similar pattern, increasing from 3% to 10% approximately during 30 years.
The group of people with only one car presented a quite different trend. Although it declined sharply from the starting 45% during the first decade, it rose for the next 2 decades, reaching its initial 45% figure again.
