The pictures illustrate the evolution of the docks in a certain town since 1980.
Overall, the area has undergone tremendous changes, transforming from an industrial zone into a lively recreational area.It is also obvious that the river, which was full of cargo ships sailing to the eastern coast, has become almost vacant.
In 1980, the docks used to include various industrial facilities; three L shaped warehouses in total, the bigger two warehouses locating on the northern part, while the smaller one on the south. Similarly, a crane – designed to load and unload heavy items – stood on the riverbank next to each of these warehouses. In addition, cargo ships frequented the docks through the river, flowing to the east.
Looking at the changes taking place in the site today, the three old cranes have been removed and has given way to a music club, whereas the former warehouses have been turned into public facilities – a shopping center and children’s playground on the northern part. Furthermore, a restaurant has been introduced in the place of the previous southern warehouse, adjacent to which, a brand-new hotel and a green park enclosed with a footpath, which stretches along the coast can be observed. This modern infrastructure renders the zone an ideal place to have rest and entertainment for visitors.
Moreover, a wide bridge and a flood barrier across the river have been constructed. While the former serves as a means of reaching the other side of the river, the latter protects the coast from natural disasters such as floods.
