Dear Sarah,

I hope you had a wonderful trip! I’ve been meaning to write to you as soon as you got back because I owe you a sincere apology for something that happened while I was staying at your place.

I’m so sorry to tell you that I accidentally knocked over your ceramic lamp in the living room last Thursday evening. It was completely my fault – I was rearranging the sofa to watch a film and I didn’t realise how close I was to the side table. The lamp fell and the base cracked. I felt absolutely terrible about it.

On a more positive note, I’ve already looked into getting it repaired. There’s a specialist ceramics restorer just a few streets from your place – I spoke to them and they said it’s fixable for around £30. I’d obviously cover the full cost – please don’t worry about that at all. Alternatively, if you’d prefer a replacement, I’m more than happy to sort that out too.

Again, I’m truly sorry and I hope this doesn’t spoil your homecoming! Can’t wait to hear about your trip.
