It is a common belief that people who work harder should receive high wages. However, I firmly believe that salary should be based on their achievements and contributions because effort and income are less likely to be commensurate.
To begin with, the reality that efforts are not related to income shows the inequality of wage system. Some professions receive high salaries because they need to learn rare skills or to train for a long period, whereas other jobs get relatively low income in spite of the high work force. These differences are deep-rooted in consumption and production in the labor market and the job specialty. As a result, it is hard to judge their wage only by regarding effort. Therefore, the attitude that accepts diverse income levels is helpful to respect the characteristics and values of jobs, which can contribute to maintaining fairness in the labor market. For example, to become a teacher, people have to study for a long time and pass many exams. However, after becoming a teacher, they tend to suffer from hard work, such as demanding parents, but their salaries are low, compared to the process of being a teacher.
On top of that, salaries have to be decided by their achievement and the degree of contribution to their organization, not the amount of effort. This is because if companies give a reward to highly achieved employees, employees are likely to gain motivation to work effectively and creatively in order to achieve a goal. Consequently, this rewarding system may contribute to increasing work efficiency and productivity, which results in improved companies’ competitiveness and the satisfaction of workers. For instance, one of my friends came up with an idea that led to their company increasing salary in a short time. However, just due to the reason that she finished it in a short timely manner, she received low wage and bonus.
To sum up, considering achievements for salary not only motivates people to make innovative consequences, but also provides equality of their results. For these reasons, I am of the opinion that people who work hard do not deserve to receive high salaries.
