At present, it is becoming increasingly common for adults and children to work and study from home thanks to technology becoming more affordable and accessible in society. From my perspective, I believe this trend poses more positive than negative, and my reasons will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
On the bright side, one major advantage of technology for adults and students is that it helps reduce commuting time. Since technology allows people to work and study from long distance using computers and mobile phones, they no longer need to waste hours of travelling between home and work or school. Switching to online format not only allows adults and children to be on time easier, but also to prepare and spend time commuting more effectively for other purposes, such as preparing paperworks or doing exercises. Furthermore, by utilising technology, workers and students are open to more international job opportunities and scholarships. For instance, Vietnamese artists can apply and work for American companies without flying there themselves, or Korean highschoolers signing up for international training programs in Germany can still attend from their own cozy home.
On the contrary, I would not overlook the downsides of this development. As working and studying online rapidly gain popularity, many research point toward its negative effects, namely the lack of focus and motivation. Compared to being present in physical classes or real meeting rooms, where people have to pay attention and join in conversation actively, those who stay in the comfort of their home tend to be lazy and distracted. As a result, most workers and students show a decline in performance, which in turns leads to a decrease in personal growth.
In conclusion, there are both merits and demerits of using technology to work and study online. However, I believe that this situation is more positive than negative because it helps adults and students to spend less time commuting and gain access to more international opportunities.
