Working and studying from home are increasingly popular with both adults and children due to the development of technology. The benefits of this are recognizable; however, I believe this shift is more of a negative one.
On the positive side, remote jobs or studies are convenient as people can work or study at any time they want from the comfort of their home. Moreover, this could help employers and students allocate their time more according to their specific needs and preferences, for everyone has different times during the day when they’re most productive. Some people find themselves most effective in the morning, whereas others can only feel operative at night. What is more, working or studying from home doesn’t require commuting. If this trend continues, the amount of traffic on the streets can be reduced dramatically, fostering less carbon dioxide emissions on our planet and helping with protecting our environment.
Nevertheless, on the negative side, spending most of your time at home can be frustrating. Not going outside much can restrict one’s amount of social interactions, a fundamental human need, and for that, it can alter one’s mental health. For instance, during COVID-19 when social distancing was applied, everyone was working and studying from home, so social activities were hindered. After the pandemic, a rise in the number of mental health diagnoses was witnessed within the community, a clear proof of how not being able to socialize and go out can affect us greatly. As long as individuals still need physical interactions to thrive, remote work and studies cannot be widespread for a healthy society to be maintained.
To conclude, I believe the trend of starting to work and study from home, though it does bring many advantages, is a negative trend if it becomes common due to its drawbacks.
