Band 9: Governments should spend money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The allocation of national budgets toward transportation infrastructure is a subject of significant debate. Some argue that expanding highway networks is essential for a growing population, while others believe that the priority should be the rail system. In my opinion, I completely agree that the government should prioritize investment in railways because it is a more environmentally sustainable and economically efficient way to move people and goods.

The primary reason why I believe railway investment is superior is its role in reducing carbon emissions and air pollution. Roads are often clogged with private vehicles and heavy trucks, which release massive amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In contrast, modern electric trains can transport thousands of passengers simultaneously with a significantly smaller carbon footprint. For instance, high-speed rail systems in countries like Japan have successfully reduced the number of short-haul flights and car journeys between major cities. Therefore, shifting funds from roads to rails is an essential step in combating global warming.

Furthermore, from an economic perspective, railways offer a more scalable solution for long-term growth and investment. While building more roads often leads to “induced demand,” where new lanes quickly fill up with more traffic, a well-managed train network can handle increasing capacity without requiring more land. Additionally, efficient rail links between industrial hubs lower the cost of transporting raw materials and finished products. Consequently, this boosts trade and increases the overall productivity of the national economy, providing a better return on investment for taxpayers than the constant repair and widening of asphalt roads.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that public funding should be directed toward the development of railways. While roads are necessary for local access, the environmental benefits of reduced pollution and the economic advantages of high-capacity transport make the railway the far better choice for the future. It is crucial that governments embrace sustainable infrastructure to support both the planet and the economy.
