Band 5: graph illustrating the number of complaints due to road work (User-Written IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay)

The graph presented illustrates/indicates/presents/outlines the progression of the main causes for noise-related complaints received by the Health Department of the city of Newton up to 1996. The graph shows a significant decrease over time of the number of complaints due to road work. However a mirror, or reverse trend can be observed for reports of noise nuisance caused in a domestic setting. While up to the early nineties the main cause for complaints about noise used to be generated by factories (mainly driven by factories), the graph shows that traffic noises have over time become a major source of concern in Newton city. Although (bien que) the number of complaints based on traffic noise reached a low 200 between 1980 and 1988, it steadily grew up to reach a 600-complaint peak in 1996, thereby (ainsi) almost topping (dépassant presque) the number of complaints attributed to factory noise. Overall the graph demonstrates that the decline of noise nuisances caused by road network maintenance operations is counterbalanced by the significant increase in household noise nuisance between 1984 and 1996.
