Band 7+: Homelessness is increasing in many major cities around the world. What do you think are the main causes of this problem and what measures could be taken to solve it? Cause/reason:

The phenomenon of homelessness has been upsurging dramatically in numerous urban centres globally, owing to various interrelated factors, including economic instability, overpopulation and inadequacy of affordable housing, to name a few. This essay will examine these fundamental causes in depth and propose viable solutions to mitigate this pressing social problem.

One of the significant causes behind unshelteredness is overpopulation in city centres as it attracts vast numbers of individuals seeking employment and better living conditions, leading to an unsustainable influx of residents. For instance, cities like Toronto, New York, have witnessed dramatic population increase, resulting in heightened competition for limited resources and accommodations, ultimately leading to the housing crisis. Apart from this, economic disparity plays a pivotal role in intensifying homelessness. A noticeable divide exists between wealthy individuals and those living below the poverty line. Consequently, low-income earners are forced to allocate an inappropriate portion of their income, leaving them vulnerable to homelessness in the event of unforeseen expenses.

To combat this issue, population management strategies can be implemented, such as promoting urban decentralisation, which can mitigate such pressures by encouraging individuals to settle in less populated areas, subsequently distributing the economic and housing burden fairly. Besides, a re-evaluation of wage policies is necessary, alongside the execution of social welfare programs aimed at providing financial assistance for the underprivileged by constructing affordable housing units and implementing regulations to control rent inflation. By creating more accessible living spaces, cities can significantly reduce the number of individuals facing homelessness.

In conclusion, overcrowding along with economic disparity in cities are the major causes behind this trend; however, looking at some potential remedial measures such as re-working wage policy and an adequate strategy to control the population can assist in diminishing the issue of homelessness.
