Band 9: In education and employment, some people work harder than others. Why do some people work harder? Is it always a good thing to work hard?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, the tendency for people to put greater effort into studies and careers has emerged as a matter of considerable public debate. This essay delves into the root causes behind this situation and analyses whether working hard is always beneficial.

Several underlying factors contribute to this choice. This can be largely attributed to the fact that students and workers from underprivileged backgrounds and under financial constraints experience difficulties in covering their living expenses. Therefore, in order to secure a stable life, they consider career success the only means to upgrade social mobility. Another significant driver is self-motivation. As a matter of fact, ambitious individuals who often have strong work ethics tend to desire for achievement and recognition from others. These factors collectively fuel the growing severity of this issue.

It is understandable why some people are willing to work harder than others. This is obviously because those who work with dedication and enthusiasm live with a strong sense of purpose, which fosters a sense of fulfillment in their daily lives. Although this choice can be advantageous in some ways, excessive hard work can cause problems. This can be explained in today’s context, where workaholics are more likely to suffer from physical exhaustion and burnout. What this means is that due to devoting too much time and effort to work, they are deprived of quality time for their beloved ones and social connections, which gradually culminate in social isolation and mental health problems. A pertinent illustration can be seen in research in Japan showing that, because of long working hours without sufficient personal time and social interaction, many employees suffer from depression and anxiety, eventually leading to severe health consequences.

In conclusion, this phenomenon arises from a complex interplay of factors. I believe that making greater efforts to work and study is not always a great option to maintain the quality of life. Therefore, a balanced approach is the best way to ensure both success and well-being.
