Positive And Negative

Band 9: In many countries around the world, rural people are moving to cities, so the population in the countryside is decreasing. Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, people all over the world choose to leave the countryside and move to bigger towns and cities. As a result, the population in rural regions is decreasing. Although there must be objective reasons for this tendency, I believe that it is a negative development.

First of all, massive relocation to cities may lead to overpopulation. Besides literal crowdedness, it results in overloading of public services like the healthcare system and public transport. Also, if the population increases, it becomes more difficult to find a job. The estate market is inflating, which means that rent prices grow, and new developments become too expensive. For example, the population of Russia’s capital, Moscow, is roughly 15 million. And despite being the wealthiest city in the country, the problems of overpriced housing, collapsing public transport, and air pollution are often discussed in local newspapers.

The countryside, in turn, also suffers from the decrease in population. The main problem is the lack of workforce. Traditionally, people were occupied in agricultural manufacturing, but these jobs are now less popular, especially among younger generations. This is problematic because if there were local farming products, the carbon footprint of deliveries supplying big cities would be much smaller. For this reason, in many cities in Europe, businesses selling locally grown vegetables and fruits are promoted.

To conclude, I think people moving to cities creates a lot of problems. Cities may not be able to cope with the rapid increase of population. And living in the countryside and working in local farms would be beneficial not only for the neighboring cities but also for the environment.
