In many parts of the world, individuals often move abroad to find labor and stable income. Some argue that having long distance relationships with friends and family is bad, while others believe it is for the better in order to have stability in the future. In my opinion, there are more advantages than disadvantages to working abroad.
Having a high paying job brings benefits for both individuals and wider society. For the workers themselves, the most obvious benefit is that they earn money that makes them financially stable or at least much less of burden on their families while, at the same time, having time for leisure that makes them mentally healthy. In Philippines, for example, a sizeable proportion of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) are paid twice the amount of salary offered by the country itself. If this opportunity is given, sustainability of Filipino families can be maintained.
Among the drawbacks, overseas workers’ limitation of communication is often viewed warily by the families. With the different timezones among countries, the ability to communicate and maintain good relationships can be at risk. To that we could add their potential lack of ability to focus and maintain good emotional health. Nevertheless, any individual that is keeping up with the pace of technological change, can utilize social media platforms as a way of connecting with peers which makes the relationship stronger.
People are working abroad, and increasing numbers of overseas workers remain. Although there are downsides to this trend, I believe that they are outweighed by the advantages to both individual and society.
