In this day and age, the age at which one can retire from employment has increased in several nations. Although raising the retirement age has several advantages, the drawbacks may be far more significant.
On the one hand, there is no doubt that increasing the age of retirement can offer a number of advantages. Firstly, it contributes to the country’s economic sustainability by effectively alleviating the financial strain on pension and social security funds systems. By working longer, older employees help ensure these systems remain sustainable, benefiting society as a whole. For instance, countries like Japan have raised the retirement age to support their aging populations and maintain economic balance. Secondly, the older workforce possesses professional expertise, along with extensive hands-on experience which can benefit organizations and the economy, translating into higher streams of revenue. Therefore, it seems understandable why the rise in retirement age is beneficial to a certain extent.
On the other hand, despite the aforementioned merits, I do believe that they are overweighed by the downsides. One major downside is the potential health decline among the elderly. The more people age, the more health issues they have to suffer, making continuing work increasingly challenging and stressful. For example, older workers in physical demanding jobs are easily prone to workplace injuries, and chronic health problems, leading to reduced productivity and increased healthcare costs. Another disadvantage is the limited job opportunities for the youth. When older workers remain in their positions longer, there are fewer vacancies for young generations entering the workforce. This situation can lead to higher employment rates among youth, exacerbating economic challenges for this demographic.
In conclusion, while there are advantages such as economic stability and skill utilization among older workers, I strongly believe that the drawbacks of health decline and limited job opportunities for youth outweigh these positive features.
