An increasing number of countries are witnessing a rise in the number of young people who are becoming involved in crime-related activities. This essay will explore two main causes of this issue and propose effective measures to address it.
Regarding the main causes, a major contributing factor for many adolescents is an adverse environment. Growing up in a harmful environment surrounded by criminals may have a considerable negative impact on young people, causing them to view illegal behaviour as normal and eventually imitate it. On top of that, financial difficulties may push young individuals towards theft or similar activities. Poverty can be a significant contributing factor, as some youngsters may resort to theft or other illegal activities to meet their basic financial needs.
A clear solution to tackle this problem is to provide greater parental guidance in both financial and personal matters. A lack of parental attention can negatively affect a child’s personality and behaviour, whereas providing sufficient support and guidance can help prevent them from developing destructive habits. Such guidance can prevent adolescents from falling into harmful patterns of behaviour and instead encourage them to find their place in life. From my perspective, imposing conventional penalties, such as placing young offenders in juvenile detention centres, may be counterproductive, as exposure to a hostile environment surrounded by other offenders could worsen the situation. A more effective approach would be to implement preventive measures from an early age, including parental supervision, emotional support and guidance on how to deal with personal and financial difficulties.
To conclude, factors contributing to youth crime, such as toxic environments and financial difficulties, can be associated with inadequate parental attention and support. Therefore, providing young people with stronger parental guidance and taking preventive measures from an early age could help prevent this prevalent issue and reduce the incidence of crime among young people.
