There is a view that it is unattainable to be a responsible visitor, despite some people have made efforts to protect both culture and environment of the nations they visit. While this notion has some merit, I disagree with it to a large extent.
It is understandable why being a responsible tourist might seem unfeasible. Tourism inherently contributes to environmental degradation, with flights and vehicles used by visitors producing a great deal of vehicular emissions. The increased level of carbon dioxide can, in turn, trap heat in the atmosphere and exacerbate the climate change. Visiting a foreign nation may also carry a risk of disrespecting other cultures. Tourists might inadvertently behave poorly in front of locals, such as recording in public places, talking loudly to their friends, or disobeying social norms. Taken together, responsible tourism might appear imposibble.
Nevertheless, individuals can noticeably mitigate their impact on tourist destinations through conscientious efforts, chief among them being ecotourism. Not only can visitors opt for an environmentally friendly means of transportation during their visit, namely electric vehicles, public transport, and public bicycles, they can also pay additional green taxes for their flights to support ecological campaigns. Moreover, travellers can learn the traditions and customs of their destination country in an effort to avoid deviant conduct. If a tourist watches travel blogs on the internet in advance, for example, they are more likely to meet social expectations and avoid upsetting native citizens. Given these factors, I feel that it is possible to reduce the negative influence of tourism.
In conclusion, although tourism naturally causes environmental issues, I believe that responsible tourism is attainable, as these problems can be mitigated by making eco-friendly choices. Whilst ecotourism can significantly lower the ecological impact of travelling, studying foreign cultures beforehand can help travellers avoid disrespecting local customs and beliefs.
