Band 6+: In some countries increasing number of people are suffering from health problem as a result of eating to much fast food. It is necessary for government to impose high tax on this kind of food. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

Health problems related to the increased consumption of fast food are incredibly concerning and have been impacting our society. Therewith, I agree that is essential for the government to demand higher tax on this kind of food. Fast food is a ever-growing industry. Due to its low cost of production and the rapidity of how it is made, people opt to consume those “junk food” that can be tasty. However, the consumption of quick meals have been causing more damages than positive effects. For example, the great majority of this type of cuisine are known to be detrimental to our health, and in countries like United States of America, fast food is the main source of diseases such as diabetes and obesity, or even cancer, due to carcinogenic substances contained in that products. I believe, the government should increase the taxes on fast food, whether in restaurants, snack bars or supermarkets. The affordability of this kind of product makes it attractive to consumers, so rising prices will hopefully cause an intake reduction. For instance, members of the European Union adopted that method on products with higher levels of sugar and fast food. Moreover, comparisons between The Netherlands and The U.S. had shown that raising taxes results in low-consumption, consequently being better for the citizens health. To conclude, quick meals are leading to irreversible health issues. I believe, in order to avoid that, the state should inflict heavy taxes as the affordability is the main reason why individuals decide to ingest unhealthy food.
