Band 7+: In some countries, many more people are choosing to live alone nowadays than in the past. Is this a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There has been increasing popularity of lone lifestyle in some countries recently. While it allows people to be more independent, it certainly is affecting people in a lot of negative ways. In my opinion, the number of advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

The notion of an independent and solitary lifestyle is very appealing to today’s youth. Living alone not only gives more freedom but also allows an individual to think more progressively and get more experience at an early age. A person living alone has to take care of all day-to-day chores themselves such as cooking and cleaning. Notably, this also helps in the overall development of a person. This ultra-challenging and independent lifestyle is the main advantage of living alone as it makes you grow as a person.

However, an unsocial lifestyle also has negative effects on a person’s mental health. Having no one to talk to is depressing for many and it leads to suicidal thoughts. According to a study, loneliness is attributed to 40% of suicide cases. Furthermore, a rise in demand for housing is likely to push property prices and rents which severely affects the poor people. Halifax, for example, is recently facing a housing crisis due to which poor people in large numbers are forced to live in tents. Anticipating the aforementioned reasons, the disadvantages far easily outweigh the positive aspects.

Living lonely has become an incredibly popular lifestyle in some countries. Although people will experience and learn many day-to-day skills, mental & emotional health as well as financial reasons are major barriers. In conclusion, I believe that a person should prefer the type of lifestyle based on their mental and financial strength and should become more sociable.
