There are a number of countries in which their people have health problems because of eating too much fast food, and to prevent this, many governments have charged a high tax rate on junk food. But, literally, my honest opinion is that this higher tax formula will not be very effective alone; other alternatives should work along with this, such as public awareness campaigns, healthier food alternatives, and also cheaper fruits.
Imposing excess tax on junk food will have two effects, one may reduce fast food consumption, but on the other hand, many people will suffer, especially students, workers, and also older people. Most students eat fast food or street food for their tiffin or even for lunch, as this kind of food is available everywhere and is inexpensive, so it is the daily worker’s fast choice for their meal. Old people used to eat fast food when they are outside home to take their medicine.
Along with higher taxes, governments should ensure public awareness about how unhealthy and harmful fast food is and also plan for the availability of alternative fresh food everywhere at the lowest affordable rate for all people. Fruits are very healthy food so if governments can arrange fruits availability with lower cost, this will be great for old peoples.
So, according to my above statement, I totally disagree that imposing a higher tax could be a single solution.
