Some countries allow legal gun ownership and distribution, and some people argue that this policy is the cause of the increasing number of shooting crimes. I firmly agree with this viewpoint, and I will provide further explanation to support my viewpoint in this essay.
In my opinion, banning or applying stricter regulations towards gun ownership is the most straightforward way to minimize the risks of illegal shootings. While the common justification for gun possession is self-defense, there have been many cases when people use guns to purposely hurt others or to inflict violence, and the past shooting cases are obvious evidence. When conflicts reach an extreme point and individuals can no longer control their emotions or think consciously of the consequences like imprisonment or severe penalties, they will resort to violence and shooting out of anger. In these cases, no preventative measures are effective in preventing shooting, except for the strict ban of gun ownerships. For this reason, I consider a society without guns much safer than a place where everyone carries guns on the street.
On the other hand, I believe that highly accessible possession of guns is the root of the rising numbers of shooting crimes in the past few years. The survey has indicated that countries that prohibit regular people from owning lethal weapons, including guns, have significantly lower rates of shootings cases. Weapon prohibition policies not only prevents regular citizens from owning weapons, but also restricts the wide distribution of ammunition, which poses alarming threats to innocent people’s safety. For instance, past offenders or terrorists restricted from purchasing guns may steal them from the other owners or even rob a gun shop. This action is hardly attainable in countries where there are no gun stores or people carrying this weapon around.
In conclusion, I believe that the increasing numbers of crimes involving gun violence is a direct consequence of legal gun ownership in some nations. Therefore, the most effective and direct way to prevent shooting crimes violence is to restrict people from owning guns in the first place.
