In the coming years, all types of vehicles such as cars, buses, and trucks are expected to operate without drivers, carrying only passengers. While there are certain advantages to automated cars, I believe the disadvantages far outweigh them.
One major benefit of self-operating vehicles is improved road safety. This is because autonomous vehicles rely on advanced sensors to monitor traffic conditions continuously. Moreover, they are free from human errors like emotional stress, fatigue, and surrounding distractions, which results in fewer road accidents. For instance, an automated system can detect obstacles and apply brakes instantly, resulting in a reduction in the number of accidents.
The significant drawbacks include the risk of technical faults and job losses. This is because autonomous cars fully rely on computers and different software, which can be hacked or malfunction. For instance, a sudden cyberattack at high speed could occur, resulting in an accident. Consequently, people will be less interested in buying these self-driven vehicles. Another con of this is the loss of employment for professional drivers. As a result, there will be a smaller number of taxis and less public transport, leading to fewer driving jobs, such as there being no need for a driver once a vehicle can operate independently.
In conclusion, although driverless vehicles offer certain benefits, I believe that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages due to serious concerns such as job losses and technical risks.
