Band 6+: In the last decade, China has witnessed tremendous economic development. Meanwhile, a huge amount of food is wasted on a daily basis. What are the reasons of this phenomenon? What can be done to tackle the food waste problem in China?

Nowadays, food waste has already become a serious problem. In the past few decades, the amount of global food waste is on the rise. Most countries have realized the problem and try to solve it. In this essay, I will present the problems of food waste and provide solutions.

First of all, people do not waste food on purpose. They order too much food that they think they can finish or buy food on impulse, which is actually a Chinese custom. Chinese people are very kind. They welcome their friends or relative by preparing a lot of dishes, even if they know they might not be able to finish all of them. Moreover, Chinese people tend to feel insecure if they don’t store a lot of food at home. They don’t plan the amount of food they need before going shopping. This behaviour causes 74 kg food waste of each person in one family per year. People have to make a shopping list before they go shopping so that they can avoid buying too much. When serving guests, people can order food according how many people are eating so that people can finish all.

Secondly, stores and supermarkets cause serious food waste. Thousands of products turn sour or past the ‘best-before’ date. The food is eventually sent to the landfill. In addition, food products that do not interest people are also discarded; therefore, tons of food are wasted in different stores and supermarkets. Some organizations hold events to raise people’s awareness of saving food. Schools should hold campaigns to teach their students to treasure food. Meanwhile, they can also invite organizations to educate young children the value of food.

To conclude, wasting food damages the environment. Many people are suffering from hunger every day. Both schools and the government should teach the general public to be responsible and stop wasting food.
