Nowadays, more and more people choose to work from home due to the development of technology, such as computers, the internet, and smart phones. Working from home has certain advantages and disadvantages.
Working from home exerts some positive effects on both the environment and individuals. One of the main merits when people decide to work from home is that it can reduce carbon footprints. Commuting to companies by vehicles can cause many greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide. Working from home can reduce the use of private cars or motorcycles, lessening the emissions of carbon dioxide. Secondly, telecommuting allows individuals to have flexibility, since they can arrange their workload and schedule by themselves. For example, when an engineer works from home, he or she can decide to reply to a customer first, or debug a program first on their own.
On the other hand, working from home brings some downsides to people. First, since home is a relaxing place for most people, employees can not be as concentrated in companies, which can lead to the decrease of efficiency. Another negative impact is that it blurs the boundaries between life and work. People would mix life and work together because they can easily be distracted by their own business. In my personal experience, my mother went to a dentist during her working time, so she did not finish her job on time.
There is a tendency for people to work from home since many advanced communication tools such as Google meet have been released recently. This phenomenon has both upsides and downsides. Working from home reduces greenhouse gases, and brings people flexibility. However, it also makes people absent-minded while they work, and blur the line between personal affairs and workloads.
