It is often claimed that nowadays, most scientific studies are funded and carried out by private businesses rather than government. The advantages are far more significant than the disadvantages, faster scientific progress and less pressure on government budgets are being two examples.
One the one hand, there are some drawbacks to paying and conducting scientific research by private businesses instead of the government. One of the main disadvantages is private companies tend to focus on the research that brings more profit rather than studies which are beneficial for the society. For example, private firms are less interested in developing treatment, medicine or vaccines that brings low financial profit. Moreover, next disadvantage is high cost investments on studies which demands returning profit. As a result, innovated new medicines or technologies are sold at high prices which can be unaffordable for poor people.
On the other hand, the research is financed and carried out by private firms can be greatly beneficial. Those private companies can invest more money to scientific projects in order to develop new medicines, technologies or products quicker than competitors. For example, unlike government-paid research, private firms can find new treatments, medicines or vaccines for serious or rare diseases. Moreover, scientific studies demand more financial support. If it is conducted by private firms, government spend public funds on other important areas such as healthcare, education and road infrastructure.
In conclusion, it is argued that in these days, private companies investing and carrying out most of the scientific research rather than government. Faster scientific developments and less pressure on the government budgets are more significant advantages which outweigh the disadvantages.
