Band 8+: It is important for all towns and cities to have large public spaces such as squares and parks. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is essential to have sustainable development in towns and cities. In this regard, many believe that towns and cities should include large outdoor public spaces like parks and squares. I fully agree with this opinion because parks help to make cities greener and reduce pollution, while squares provide valuable areas for public gatherings and social interaction.

Firstly, in the urban jungle of today, it is challenging to find peaceful places to spend free time. Parks and squares offer spaces where people can relax and unwind. Individuals can visit nearby parks during their leisure time to relieve stress by connecting with nature. Additionally, squares provide venues for large public gatherings, such as meetings or festival celebrations. For example, Times Square in New York is renowned worldwide for hosting large crowds during New Year’s Eve and Christmas celebrations. Squares also offer commercial spaces where brands can advertise their products, generating revenue for the city.

Moreover, having parks in densely populated cities provides fresh air and helps to reduce pollution. Pollution is a significant concern in rapidly growing urban areas. Well-maintained parks can mitigate pollution levels by offering green spaces that improve air quality. Despite these benefits, there are some drawbacks to maintaining large public places. Parks and squares require regular upkeep, which involves substantial financial investment. Allocating funds for park maintenance might limit resources available for other development projects.

In conclusion, having large public outdoor spaces is crucial for the sustainable development of cities. Parks and squares not only provide areas for relaxation and socializing but also contribute to a healthier environment and economic growth. Therefore, the advantages of having such spaces far outweigh the disadvantages.
