In this rapidly evolving world, history remains the cornerstone of the educational system, making the question of whether children should be taught local history or world history a perennial subject of debate. The prompt suggests that it is more important for educational institutions to teach children local history than world history. I mostly disagree with this position for two reasons, which I will elucidate below. I do concede, however, that despite the strength of my argument, certain limitations and counterexamples merit acknowledgement.
To commence with, this is the era of globalization. Every single country is interconnected with others. No particular country can think of its existence without the help or involvement of other countries. Therefore, to maintain international relationships, responsible individuals should have sufficient knowledge about the history of that country. If a country belongs positive history then other countries will show interest to make friendship with that country. As, children are the future leaders of a nation, they should gather adequate knowledge about the global history from their school-life.
Additionally, since the world is advancing swiftly, competition in the job market also increasing. Holding the knowledge about the world is obviously a positive thing. One can analyze the history of a particular country and can make important decisions. In the job interview, the examiner will definitely prefer a candidate who has extra knowledge about the world. Thus, the candidate will get extra advantage in the professional life.
Admittedly, without any doubt, local history is also important. A citizen should know about the past of his/her nation. For example, without knowing about the liberation war, a person can’t feel the importance of independent country. He/she can’t realize how valuable the liberty is. Therefore, beside learning world history, children also should keep sufficient knowledge about his/her nation.
To sum up, although local history is one of the important things that the children should be taught, regarding the current era of interconnected world, they should definitely learn the global history for the betterment of them and in a broader sense for the betterment of their country. Therefore, I don’t believe that local history should be more emphasized.
