Some people believe that learning foreign languages is a waste of time because they can use digital translation tools, which work instantly and accurately. I strongly disagree with this view because many translation tools can provide inaccurate meanings of words. Moreover, learning foreign languages can contribute to brain development.
One of the main reasons why I disagree with this statement is that translation tools can provide inaccurate meanings of words. Some people may use translation tools to understand unfamiliar words; however, they may not know how to use them correctly in different contexts. In other words, digital translation technologies can translate these words, but the translations can be incorrect in a specific context. For example, many tourists use apps to translate unknown words when visiting another country, and they can receive an inaccurate meaning of a word, whereas people who learn foreign languages can translate words and explain their meanings with some examples quite accurately. As a result, learning foreign languages gives people the ability to understand unfamiliar words better than those who rely solely on translation tools.
Another important reason is that learning foreign languages can contribute to brain development. When people start learning a new language, they may improve their executive functions – such as solving complex problems and paying attention to detail. This means that foreign language learners may develop better memory and concentration skills than other people who translate every unfamiliar word. For example, students who learn a foreign language have to remember new words and switch between different linguistic systems, which requires them to use memory and concentration. As a result, learning foreign languages can strengthen cognitive abilities that are important in people’s everyday and professional lives.
To conclude, many people consider that learning foreign languages is not a necessary skill because they can use translation tools; however, I believe that learning foreign languages is a crucial skill to understand and use words more accurately than digital translation tools, and to contribute to brain development.
