It is true that many criminals, right after being released from prison, commit further crimes. While several factors contribute to this negative development, in my view, effective steps can be taken by governments to address the growing issue of recidivism.
There are some key reasons why released inmates reoffend after prison. Unemployment is a major factor. Formerly incarcerated individuals often have difficulty securing employment due to their criminal history and lack of skills. As a result, they remain jobless. Financial independence also plays a significant role in recidivism. Without financial stability, they may feel compelled to return to illegal activities to support themselves. Another key reason for reoffending is society’s perception of incarcerated individuals. Those released from prison often face societal pressure and stigma, which can push them back into criminal behavior or into criminal groups, especially if they return to the same circumstances that led to their first crime.
However, governments can take several steps to address this issue. Employment readiness programs can help reduce recidivism. While incarcerated or under probation, inmates should be given opportunities to gain certifications and participate in work assignments. Furthermore, governments can introduce rehabilitation programs that teach technical skills, opening up a wide range of job opportunities. Financial education is also critically important to help individuals achieve long-term financial independence. Inmates need to learn to manage their money and save for the future, leading to financial stability. Moreover, mental health and addiction support have proven to be essential and life-changing opportunities for incarcerated individuals, particularly young people. Substance abuse is one of the most common indicators of illegal activity among youth and must be addressed to ensure successful reintegration into society.
In conclusion, although there are many factors that lead inmates to reoffend, I am convinced that governments can effectively tackle this problem in several ways.
