We live in the times when digital nomadism is becoming more and more widespread, and it is tantelizinh for many people to work from home. However, while some people assume that remote work improves the quality of life, I side with those who claim that it has a negative development on our society.
On the one hand, it is can be argued that employees who have an online job economize their drive time and work in comfort. They can also spend more time with family and friends and even travel constantly, what is highly beneficial for one’s well-being. This tendency have changed fundamentally the way people used to think about their jobs as something hard and exhausting. For instance, there are a lot of digital nomads hired by the IT-companies, with good salaries and living in the developing countries with the low costs. Therefore, average level of happiness and contentment among population is growing.
However, I am convinced that only a small fraction of people are benefited from this trend, whereas in the cities it creates instability. Local residents suffer from rising prices on the rent, since wealthy freelancers can pay much more money. There are also a number of contradictions about taxes, as employees who work on the one country pay charges to the another, in which they live. All of these leads to the leakage of money from the state’s treasury and widens the gap between rich and poor. In new York state this issue was very common, and the government introduced the law which forced digital nomads to pay taxes despite their llocation. I hold the opinion that it will allow to deter the above mentioned dire consequences.
In conclusion, although work from home gives a lot of opportunities and expands one’s horizons, it is available for the minority of people and creates complexities for others. Therefore, on balance, I believe that office work suits our society nowadays.
