Many processed food and beverages contain high levels of sugar that leads towards many health related issues. I partially agree to make high level sugary products expensive in order to demotivate people for overconsumption.
Most of the people are consuming products which have high levels of sugar because they are cheaper and easily available compared to other substitutes products. For instance, in Nepal the price of Coke and other processed drinks are inexpensive, about half of the price than organic fruit juice and it is ready to go in every supermarket, restaurants and local shops. Overconsumption of sugary products leads to various health problems like diabetes, obesity etc. One of the ways, to control it is to make them expensive by taxing 20-30% extra, motivating people to substitute healthy drinks.
I also believe that, sugar plays a vital role in the functioning of the human body smoothly. So, instead of making them unreachable to people, companies can bring products similar to original taste with low sugar. So, people can have them without a second thought about their health.
To conclude, consumption of sugar products can be discouraged by making them expensive by taxing, convincing people to change their preference to healthy foods and drinks. However, companies can also focus on making low level sugar products without hampering the price and original taste.
