It is a controversy over whether the government ought to supply enough food for its people and minimize food imports. I totally agree with this statement that countries should prioritize domestic food production and put a restraint on food imports.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why a country should prioritize producing its food for its population. Firstly, producing local food exerts positive impacts on the economy and society. It is due to the fact that consuming domestically produced products will create more job opportunities in the farming and food processing industries so the percentage of unemployed will decrease. Moreover, self-supplying can create a favorable condition for citizens about living costs. As the price of domestic products is far from as extravagant as the price of imported products. As a result, people will be able to alleviate financial pressure.
On the other hand, there are several explanations why a country should put a restraint on food imports. Firstly, decreasing the quantity of imported foods can restrict the health risks. Since food companies will apply chemicals to food to prolong its freshness and stop it from spoiling while it is being transported. Therefore, if people eat imported food on a daily basis, this will exert negative impacts on their health. Furthermore, importing food over a long period will induce the increase in CO2 released into the atmosphere. Because it is necessary to make use of means of transportation such as airplanes, ships, or trucks to import goods across countries. Consequently, it will give rise to environmental degradation and aggravate global warming.
In conclusion, it is my contention that countries should focus on domestic production and minimize food imports.
