Band 8+: Many people go through life doing work that they hate or have no talent for. Why does this happen? What are the consequences of this situation?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is common in our society to practice a profession that does not bring one joy or does not correspond to one’s talent. This situation may occur due to an individual not holding a degree that would allow them to obtain their dream job, and may contribute to the general level of life quality being rather low.

For those of us who come from low-income households or are a part of a marginalised group, getting a degree that would put them in advantage when searching for jobs is not always an option. Such people often find themselves only being able to work at a place that does not require them to have a higher education, and their opportunities are limited. To highlight this issue and deal with it, many colleges across the world offer scholarships specifically targeted towards prospective students from unpriviliged backgrounds in order to help them afford studying at university.

As for the outcomes of such phenomena taking place, numerous people report feeling miserable and unsatisfied with their lives, identifying their job as one of the key reasons for that. Not only does being unhappy at one’s workplace cause stress and apathy, but it also takes away the sense of reward from a person’s life. People whose occupation fails to bring them joy find their mental state declining in such conditions. Having to deal with these problems can result in a person requiring help from a therapist to improve their life quality, which is not always accessible for those with insufficient income.

To sum up, feeling upset as a result of working an undesired job is common in people who are not given a lot of choice when it comes to picking out an occupation due to various life circumstances, and such lifestyle leads to major mental health struggles.
