In the era of modernisation, young people have more understanding of international celebrities and movie stars than historical figures in their country. There are several contributory factors to this, and steps can be taken to mitigate the issue.
In my opinion, there are two primary reasons for the young knowing more about international celebrities than historical people of their countries. Firstly, media coverage contributes to the increasing interest of people in celebrities. It is true that the personal lives of international celebrities often grab the headlines of the majority of newspapers, this, combined with the frequent use of social media by young people, is likely to make them exposed to these posts. Another second reason is the tedious teaching method of history at school. Take for example Vietnam, historical lessons are heavily theory-based and involve only giving knowledge through using textbooks without teaching aid participation such as projectors, which fails to make history interesting, thereby decreasing the number of students studying history.
Actions can be taken to tackle the issues associated with teenagers lacking knowledge of historical figures. Firstly, the teaching medium at school needs to be improved to make such people more interested in learning history. This can be achieved through organising a realistic trip to sites which worship historical figures, which can help students gain more knowledge of famous people in history. Another solution is raising people’s awareness of famous people in the past and this can be accomplished through encouraging articles related to them.
In conclusion, young people failing to pay as much attention to history as they do to celebrities can be attributed to various problems, but there are measures that can be taken to address them.Many young people now know more about international pop and movie stars than famous people in the history of their countries.
