Band 8+: More and more people are migrating to cities in search of a better life, but city life can be extremely difficult. Explain some of the difficulties of living in a city. How can governments make urban life better for everyone?

Cities are often viewed as places of opportunity; however, there are significant drawbacks to living in a large metropolis. In my opinion, governments could do much more to enhance city life for the average resident.

One major challenge for anyone considering a move to a large city is the significantly higher cost of living compared to a small town or village. City dwellers often face elevated prices for housing, transportation, and even basic food items. Additionally, urban areas frequently grapple with social issues, such as higher crime and poverty rates, when compared to rural regions. On top of that, air quality in cities tends to be poor due to pollution from traffic, and streets and public transport systems often suffer from overcrowding. Consequently, city life can become unhealthy and stressful.

Nevertheless, there are several steps that governments could take to address these challenges. Firstly, investing in the construction of affordable or social housing could help to alleviate the cost of living. Secondly, policymakers have the ability to restrict vehicle access in city centers while promoting cleaner public transportation options, which would alleviate both air pollution and traffic congestion. For instance, in London, the implementation of a congestion charge for drivers has proven effective in reducing traffic issues. A third approach would be to develop provincial towns and rural areas by relocating industries and jobs to those regions, thereby lessening the pressure on major cities.

In conclusion, governments certainly have the capacity to implement a variety of measures to improve the quality of life for all city residents.

Some people believe that governments should spend more on preventing diseases rather than treating them. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

I completely agree that governments should prioritize disease prevention over treatment. Preventive measures reduce the number of people who become ill in the first place, while many medical treatments are expensive and cannot always restore patients to full health. One reason is that preventing diseases is far more effective than treating them afterwards. Governments can […]

There is a view that University schooling must be accessible for everyone, while some may agree with this statement, I strongly believe that Universities should remain fee-based, as it will encourage students and cover utility bills. Initially, providing free high education, will eventually lead to drop in literacy rates among students. Right now, grants and […]
