It is common knowledge that modern young generations are exposed to anti-social and disrespectful behaviour. This essay aims to examine the causes and the solutions to the problem.
The cause that leads the young people to be anti-social and disrespectful is the massive changes in the technological sector. Compared to the past centuries where families were gathered at home in harmony and the children went to and studied in the school without any cultural disruption, nowadays, young people spend a lot of time and energy on social media. Technological devices take away their attention which in turn lead them to unprecedented destructive behaviour. For example, a study shows that millennials and Z generations in Indonesia have been habituated with technological breakthroughs and social media. The study also affirms that they tend to perceive virtual encounters as more valuable than real encounters with others around them. Consequently, they become strangers to their native environment in case they find it difficult to adjust their attitude and worldview with social norms.
Dealing with the situation, educational authorities should put more attention on building the character of the young generations rather than focusing on accumulating knowledge. In doing this, the curricula should contain a proportional measurement between social and cognitive quotient. For instance, instead of merely giving quantitative marks, teachers should give qualitative evaluation related to their pupils. These measurements can be included in the Report Book which is the best instrument for parents to monitor the attitude of their children.
In summary, technological advancements escalate and exacerbate the anti-social tendency among young generations. However, this problem can be anticipated if the authorities set a proportional standar to measure the improvements of the young people, especially the students, in terms of character building and knowledge elevating
