In contemporary society, an increasing number of people use the Internet to receive medical treatment without a doctor’s advice. This practice can be caused by several reasons; however, I strongly think it is a negative development because of misinformation and a lack of personalization.
It is factual that people have to seek out health advice on the Internet because of their economic budget and time constraints. To begin with, many online platforms can provide free and abundant information, making biological knowledge acquisition more affordable. Meanwhile, consulting a doctor in a hospital can be expensive, especially without health insurance. Moreover, busy working schedules could make it difficult for people to find time for a doctor’s appointment. Thus, online consultations can be quicker and more suitable for their routines.
While people have several reasons to choose to search online for medical advice, I strongly believe this action can cause many drawbacks to personal health because of misinformation and a lack of personalization. First, the Internet is riddled with inaccurate or misleading information, which can lead to misdiagnosis or inappropriate self-treatment. From that, people can encounter many bad symptoms, leading to latent diseases. In terms of personalization, online advice is only general, which can not help people to alleviate their pain or diseases. Because internet platforms often lack the personalized touch that a healthcare provider can offer, it overlooks individual health histories or specific needs.
In conclusion, although people use the internet to cure their medical symptoms because of some reasons, I am strongly convinced that it is a negative development as it can cause misinformation and general diagnoses.
