Positive And Negative

Band 8+: Nowadays, more people are choosing to socialise online rather than face to face. Is this a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In an era characterized by career-oriented lifestyles, coupled with the rise of electronic gadgets, many people are opting to socialize online rather than engaging in face-to-face interactions. While this trend is highly likely to hinder interpersonal skills, I believe it is largely a positive development, as it enables individuals to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, irrespective of geographical boundaries.

Critics of this trend cite multiple reasons to endorse their stance. In other words, online interaction is highly likely to pose a threat to one’s communication skills. With interacting in person, individuals can get the chance to pick up on non-verbal cues such as body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice- elements that are often lost in digital communication. Given the over-reliance on virtual interaction, this approach can make people less adept at reading these signals, potentially leading to misunderstandings or a lack of emotional depth in bonds. A case in point is someone who predominantly communicates online, who might struggle with maintaining eye contact or reading body language during in-person interactions. This, in turn, has detrimental effects on those relationships.

From my perspective, this trend has more benefits than downsides as far as global connectivity and cultural exchange are concerned. In a world where social media platforms, virtual communities, and online discussion forums have evolved, many can interact with people from different nations, belief systems, and professional backgrounds. This exposure not only helps broaden perspectives, but also it helps to build mutual understanding. Take international students, who often use online platforms to connect with peers worldwide, thereby sharing academic resources and personal experiences. In light of such actions, individuals can enrich their learning and foster a sense of global community.

In conclusion, although digital communication raises serious concerns regarding interpersonal skills, I firmly assert that it offers the opportunity to communicate with different nations, regardless of geographical barriers. Only by striking a harmonious balance between face-to-face and online interaction can we make a big difference to the fabric of society.
