Band 7+: Plastic bags, plastic bottles, and plastic packaging are bad for the environment. What damage does plastic do to the environment? What can be done by governments and individuals to solve this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It has been established that plastic materials, which are used in bagging, bottling and packaging, have been implicated as major contributors to the detriment of the surroundings. The harms done to the ecosystem by plastic include clogging of water drainage systems, death of marine life, and damage to soil. These problems can be addressed through new environmental health policies by the government and reduction in the use of these materials by the people.

Firstly, the plastic industry has revolutionized the world that we live in today, from water manufacturing to food production, and ultimately to new vehicles that are built from plastic. However, the growth in the usage of these materials has also translated into environmental hazards owing to the chemical component of plastic and ineffective methods of their disposal. Prolonged dumping of plastic into the water bodies has culminated to clogging of drainage systems, which consequently scaled up the occurrence of flooding on a global scale. In addition, microplastics, the products of the breakdown of plastic choke marine life. Hence, destroying sea animals by blocking their digestive tracts.

Secondly, plastic pollution is a widespread dilemma that can be addressed by both the governments and citizens. While governments should improve waste management systems, they should create more awareness on the adverse effects of plastic as well as enact policies to prevent improper disposal of non-degradable components. Individuals should zero in on other forms of packaging since plastic has been proven to be detrimental. For example, a study done in Nigeria in 2020 revealed that researchers will be compelled to nose out other objects to replace plastic if they are banned.

In conclusion, even though the deleterious impacts of plastic have become commonplace, they can be overcome. However, the corporate responsibility of finding lasting solutions to these mayhems is hinge on governments and their nationals.
