Band 8+: Plastic bags, plastic bottles, and plastic packaging are bad for the environment. What damage does plastic do to the environment? What can be done by governments and individuals to solve this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Plastic use has detrimental effects on the environment, contributing to pollution in land, water, and air. Both governments and individuals play a vital role in addressing this issue. This essay will discuss the responsibilities of the government and the public in preserving nature.

According to a study by the UNEP, approximately 85% of the world’s population uses plastic due to its convenience and low cost. Plastics are non-biodegradable and have irreversible effects on the environment, making them harmful. They disrupt the balance of our ecosystem in various ways, including the burning of plastic waste, which releases toxic gases that can harm both human health and wildlife. Additionally, plastic landfills can degrade soil quality and affect plant life. Moreover, the dumping of plastics into water bodies not only pollutes marine habitats but also endangers aquatic life.

The government has a crucial role in combating this issue. Strict laws should be enforced to limit the production and sale of plastic. Increasing the number of garbage disposal bins in public spaces is one effective measure. Furthermore, the government must conduct regular awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the harmful impacts of plastic usage. They should also promote eco-friendly, biodegradable alternatives.

Individuals, too, have a critical role to play. We can support government efforts to mitigate this issue by participating in various initiatives and keeping our surroundings clean by disposing of waste in designated bins. Additionally, we should use recyclable bags, bottles, and packages whenever possible.

In conclusion, plastic pollution causes irreversible damage to our environment, threatening the ecosystem. Therefore, it is our collective responsibility to take action to curb this menace for the sake of future generations.
