A school of thought think that children are ought to be taught competitive skills at school. On the other hand, others argue that cooperative skills are far more beneficial for these children. In my opinion,I agree that team building skills play a pivotal role in shaping a child for the future.
One of the key importance of learning to cooperate in school is that communication skills can be built along. These skills are essential for the little ones to be taught as there are various sub-skills to be learnt alongside. For example, dealing with confrontations and learning to negotiate during a team work helps the child to build their communication skills. As a result, these skills can be transferred when they grow to become adults and start working in a team.
Although learning to work in a team is important, some people believe a child learning to compete at school is more crucial. This is because competition is likely to motivate the child to perform better and work harder to reach their goal. These children who compete often tend to do better at school including in academics and extra-curricular activities. For instance, children who regularly join competitions, apply themselves in direct competition with their classmates. This skills can be applied in their adult life when they face competition in the job market.
In conclusion, despite some people viewing competitiveness as an important skill to be developed from young age, I believe learning to be cooperative for a childen at school should be given more importance. The reason includes the greater impact it has on society than learning to compete. As lesser social skills are being developed with the advancement in technology nowadays, team working skills should be highlighted more in school for these children.
