Animal research is a controversial topic, especially, in today’s day and age. It is often said that animals should not be used in testing because of the sheer cruelty. On the contrary, others deem it as an absolute necessity. This essay will examine both stances on the animal research.
On the one hand, animal research provides us with the crucial information about some diseases and autoimmune disorders. For instance, during the AIDS epidemic, mice were used to determine the effectiveness of the newly invented drugs. In addition, animal research speeded up the process of fighting against AIDS growing mortality rate. As a consequence, animal research saved countless lives during this brutal time in human history.
On the other hand, animal experiments are terribly unkind and pain inducing to these poor creatures. On top of that, because of different anatomical structure of humans and animals, these tests are often ineffective. For example, during the ADHD brain study information collected from monkeys and mice proved to be totally inaccurate. Hence, suffering of animals was pointless.
In conclusion, I am of the opinion, that the benefits, on the whole, do not ought weigh the disadvantages. Although animal research may improve lives of humans, it is not fair to the animals and we should look for other ways to achieve this.
