With easy access to advanced technology, social media has turned into an integral part of young people, particularly in developed urban areas. While there are social advantages to using social media platforms, it is to acknowledge its detrimental effects on mental health.
Proponents of social media cite various reasons to support their stance. When young people take full advantage of social media, including but not limited to Facebook or Instagram, they can stay in touch with family members and closest friends regardless geographical barriers, which can make establishing and maintaining relationships and friends easier! This can ultimately expand social circles and support networks, thereby building of great value emotional support, encouragement and guidance! In a world where people have been struggling with feelings of isolation and loneliness, social media can make a big difference when it comes to finding sense of belongings.
However, in my view, the negative impacts of social media should be taken into consideration. If the young spend a great deal of time glued to social media sites, such as Instagram and X(formerly known as Twitter), they may frequently face to hate speech, online harassment, cyberbullying in the form of threatening messages and derogatory comments, which fuels feelings of inadequacy and pessimism! As a consequence, they are likely to experience a profound sense of stress and anxiety, thereby increasing the risk of developing psychiatric disorders like depression and self-harm! This is especially problematic for younger generation with a lack of emotional resilience and self-control, who face difficulties in managing their emotions and navigating the complexities of social media.
In conclusion, although social media usage plays a crucial role in fostering connections and a sense of camaraderie, I believe that it is essential to recognize its serious problems associated with mental-being. Only by approaching social media with caution and setting clear boundaries can we make strides in terms of social bonding, learning and social development.
