In our modern society, it is argued whether violent criminals should be sentenced to death or not. This essay will provide information about the positive and negative aspects of this penalty.
To commence, a small fraction of prisoners is convicted with a capital punishment, mostly in cases of murder committed in particularly cruel circumstances, e.g. rape, torture, or multiple assassinations. Therefore, if those dangerous individuals were taken away from society and from the possibility of continuing in their behaviour, death penalty might be considered a safety measure to prevent a reiteration of deadly crimes. Moreover, sentencing to death numerous prisoners who received a life sentence for their violent and appalling actions, would solve the problem of overpopulation in penitentiaries.
Conversely, every possible argument who sustains lethal injection, hanging or other eventual application of the death penalty, might seem a shallow justification to ending a life without guilt. In fact, killing a person in order to avoid crimes could be seen as an unethical position or a crime itself. In addition, the justice system could be occasionally fallacious in court. An excellent example for this appears in those cases in which an innocent individual has been convicted for actions not related to him. As a consequence, applying this penalty in absence of strong evidence or witnesses which could give the certainty of the hypothetical murderous act, is dehumanizing.
In conclusion, although capital punishment has some advantages, as far as I am concerned, these positive aspects might be hardly considered an allowance to this kind of cruelty.
